Research Technician for AVRDC The World Vegetable Center

ICRISAT seeks applications from Indian nationals for the post of Research Technician for AVRDC to be based in Vijayapura, (formerly Bijapur), Karnataka. This is a nationally recruited position.

ICRISAT is a non-profit, apolitical, international organization for science-based agricultural development. Established in 1972, it is an Alliance of centers of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), and supported by more than 48 governments, foundations, and development banks. To reduce poverty, enhance crop productivity and food security and to protect the environment, ICRISAT research focuses on farming systems and crop improvement, management and utilization of sorghum, pearl millet, pigeonpea, chickpea, and groundnut in the semi-arid tropics.  

About AVRDC:  The World Vegetable Center is a nonprofit, autonomous international agricultural research center with headquarters in Taiwan and regional offices around the globe. The Center conducts research and development programs that contribute to improved incomes and diets in the developing world.

A consortium of CGIAR-Government of Karnataka is implementing a project to improve overall farm productivity by 20% and farmer incomes by 25% in four years. Two years of this project has been completed during which work was undertaken in the districts of Raichur and Chickmagalur.  A Technician is now being hired to be based in Vijayapura and implement the project plan relating to the vegetable sub-sector in Vijayapura district over the next two years (2015-2017). He will be reporting to the Site Coordinator.

Responsibilities:

  • Work under the guidance of Site Coordinator to implement the various project activities in the target locations;
  • Collect data and maintain databases on indicators in the sub-project’s consolidated action plan for
  • use in technical project reports and publications;
  • Provide technical assistance in disseminating and promoting good practices and lessons learned from various project activities;
  • Help organize and coordinate trainings to build up and strengthen the capacity of local partners in carrying out research and extension activities for vegetable growers
  • Assist in developing training extension documents, materials and programs in coordination with project team members
  • Assist in the preparation of periodic progress reports, technical papers, and presentations for meetings and annual reports as needed for donors, project beneficiaries, and team members
  • Provide project administrative support such as procurement, payments and maintaining accounts in accordance to AVRDC’s policies and regulations

Competencies:

  • Good working knowledge of vegetable cultivation in Karnataka and knowledge of the markets and the players in the market;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English and Kannada;
  • Proficiency in the use of various software applications (MS Word, MS Excel, ) and exposure to  handling variety evaluation trials;
  • Energetic and enthusiastic personality with an urge to improve the agricultural systems.

Requirements:

  • Diploma/Degree in Agriculture/Horticulture and at least 2 years’ experience in commercial horticulture.
  •  Experience in working on vegetable crops and marketing will be highly regarded.

General: 
The position is for one year, renewable based on the performance of the incumbent and the Institute's continuing need for the position. An attractive compensation is offered for the right candidate.
