hack4farmingWhat is Hack4Farming?

Agriculture companies and researchers across the world are working to help smallholder farmers adapt
to changing conditions and to take advantage of new technologies. But providing insights that are
current, relevant, and specific to the farmer’s location and circumstances remains challenging.

The Hack4Farming series exists to tackle those challenges. We are seeking agriculture stakeholders –
including representatives from seed companies, insurance companies, production companies, and many
more – and programmers, developers, and data scientists from Hyderabad’s growing base of hackers
and technology experts to join our hackathon teams.

What is the focus of Hack4Farming Hyderabad?

In order to make the best decisions possible in a changing climate, Indian farmers and agricultural value
chain actors need access to comprehensive information: forecasted weather, ideal dates for planting
and interventions, seed varieties, potential return on investment, and more. But this information is
often difficult to access, analyze, and communicate in insightful ways.

To address these challenges, Hack4Farming Hyderabad will focus on weather, systems modeling, and
their potential impacts on the Indian agriculture sector. Hackathon teams will explore how to leverage
new modeling techniques (from ICRISAT researchers), weather data (from aWhere) and Intelligent Cloud
(from Microsoft) to address these information gaps, and in so doing benefit agriculture stakeholders
such as seed producers, service providers, and farmers across India.

Why participate?

Incubate a new project, product, or start-up idea.

Hackathons provide a great environment to connect and create, and teams often emerge with ideas
they’d like to develop further. The hackathon team with the best idea leveraging modeling and weather
data to serve smallholder farmers (as determined by a panel of impartial judges) will receive a shared
cash prize of $2,000. The winning team will also be offered business and sector-specific mentorship
services with startup incubator T-Hub, to help develop their idea into a viable business or product.

Make new connections and learn.

Hackathon attendees will come from various countries, and will include representatives from ICRISAT’s
expert agricultural researchers as well as prominent technology and agribusiness companies.
Hack4Farming events also expose participants to resources, datasets, and tools they may be unfamiliar
with, helping participants either get acquainted with agricultural technology for the first time, or stay up
to date on developments in the field.

Innovate the future of agricultural development in India.

Be part of a team of talented individuals solving problems and spreading information to the places
where it is most needed.

How can I participate?

Hyderabad-based entrepreneurs, researchers, data analysts, technologists, and interested stakeholders
in the agricultural value chain are all encouraged to sign up to join a team!

We’re also looking for full-stack developers to participate, so if you have an interest in developing
agriculture technology, sign up. We will contact all participants to arrange transportation and other
necessary details. Please note that space at Hack4Farming is limited, and you must receive confirmation
of your registration from the organizers in order to attend.

We aim to have a diverse mix of perspectives and skills on each team, so even if you’re not an
agriculture or technology expert, feel free to contact us to see if your skills will be a good fit for a team.

Where can I get updates about Hack4Farming Hyderabad?

Our hackathon website will provide the most updated information on the event schedule, logistics, and
other event details. If you have questions that are not answered on the website please get in touch!

This Hack4Farming event is cohosted by aWhere, Inc., a weather and agronomic information
company, and the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT)
