Global Theme on Agroecosystems
Regional Projects
The Theme has four regional projects, three in Africa: West and Central Africa; East Africa; Southern Africa; and one in Asia that builds on the skills and expertise of the respective teams. The four regional projects of this global theme are:
    watershed
  1. Improving rural livelihoods through sustainable management of watersheds in Asia
  2. Agro-biodiversity and catchment management for agro ecosystem health in East Africa
  3. Improving livelihood strategies of the rural poor through integrated soil, water and nutrient management in Southern Africa
  4. Diversifying income-generation options for improved livelihood agro-ecosystem health in the semi-arid West and Central Africa
General Outputs
Although each regional project has its own specific outputs, from a thematic point of view the 4 regional projects contribute to 6 generic global outputs: [indicators are in brackets]
  1. Sustainable resource management options to help rural households better meet their livelihood objectives developed and disseminated in Asia and Africa (Links to GT-Crop
  2. Improvement and GT-Markets, Policy and Impact) [Socio-economic, agronomic, and cultural constraints/and or facilitating factors in technology adoption/adaptation documented]
  3. Soil, water, crops and agro-biodiversity interactions for improved crop-livestock system productivity (INRM) understood in Asia and Africa (Links to GT-Crop Improvement) [Recommendations for improved nutrient balances in crop/livestock systems adopted and promoted by partners]
  4. The resilience of agro-ecosystems enhanced through conservation and diversification of crops in Asia and Africa (Links to GT-Crop Improvement) [Wider range of crops and varieties promoted and adopted]
  5. Alternative methods for scaling up and out, including participatory approaches, simulation and spatial decisions support systems in Asia and Africa assessed and disseminated [Community-based and cooperative enterprises to provide access to input/output markets and knowledge]
  6. More effective watershed development and a range of livelihood management strategies for sustainable use of the natural resource base in Asia developed and disseminated (Link to GT-Crop Improvement and GT-Markets, Policy and Impacts) [A range of watershed development options/approaches available for evaluation and implementation by partners]
  7. Improved policies and impact strategies for efficient rain water use and management developed and disseminated in Asia (Link to GT-Markets, Policy and Impact) [Institutional innovations and policy options for efficient water use available for partners]
