10) ICRISAT dialogues with Parliamentarians, industrialists and farmers (8 August 2003)

At a meeting with 15 Members of Parliament, industrialists and farmer groups, Dr William D Dar, Director General of the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), discussed ways of enhancing the impact of the work done by the institute in India.

The Indian Farmers and Industries Alliance (IFIA) organized the 7 August meeting at the headquarters of the Confederation of Indian Industry at New Delhi.

Dr Dar spoke on behalf of ICRISAT and also the other international agricultural research institutes that are part of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). He said that the meeting was a good beginning and there was a need for similar meetings in future.

Dr Suresh Babu, Senior Advisor of the International Food Policy Research Institute, also made a presentation. Representatives of various CGIAR centres with offices at New Delhi were also present.

The MPs and IFIA officials stressed the need to take the fullest advantage of the various technological advances made by ICRISAT and the CGIAR and transfer them to Indian farmers. An MP from Orissa requested ICRISAT to suggest ways and means to improve crop production in his state.

The participants agreed that the problems of the farmers should be brought to the notice of ICRISAT so that it can evolve practical solutions to improve both crop production and the livelihoods of farmers. The CGIAR, it was felt, should emphasise research to improve the livelihood security of farmers.

The Parliamentarians assured their wholehearted cooperation for ICRISAT and the other CGIAR centres for their work in India.
