18) ICRISAT and ICAR to host Asia-Pacific agri-experts’ meetings

International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) and the Indian Council of Agriculture Research (ICAR) will jointly host three meetings related to the Asia-Pacific Association of Agricultural Research Institutions (APAARI) and the Cereals and Legumes Asia Network (CLAN). The meetings will be held from 8 to 10 October, with the inauguration and first day’s events hosted at an ICAR Institute – the National Academy of Agricultural Research Management (NAARM), Hyderabad – and the other two days at ICRISAT.

The meetings being organized are:

  • Expert consultation to review progress of agricultural research networks and consortia in Asia-Pacific that operate in partnership with APAARI or independently, and will develop plans and strategies for future collaboration involving various stakeholders.

  • APAARI Executive Committee meeting to review previous year’s APAARI activities and discuss and prepare the work plan for 2008.

  • CLAN Steering Committee meeting will review the network activities and progress during 2005-07 and plan future R&D collaboration among network members.

According to Dr William Dar, Director General of ICRISAT, the meetings provide an excellent opportunity to review and improve agricultural research and development in the Asia-Pacific region so as to increase agricultural productivity and profitability.

Around 70 participants from India and other APAARI member countries in Asia-Pacific countries will be attending the meetings, including representatives from international and national agricultural research institutions and other regional research institutions. Representatives from Australia, Bangladesh, China, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Japan, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, New Caledonia, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Pakistan, the Republic of Korea, Samoa, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Taiwan and Vietnam would be participating in the meetings.

APAARI aims at promoting and facilitating agricultural research for development in the Asia-Pacific region through novel partnerships among national agricultural research systems and other related organizations. It provides a platform for inter-regional and inter-institutional collaboration.

The Cereals and Legumes Asia Network is constituted by a group of partners working together to improve the productivity of cereals and legumes in Asia. It facilitates technology exchange and regional coordination of research and development. CLAN works under the APAARI umbrella, supported by the World Vegetable Center (AVRDC), the International Center for Agricultural Research in Dry Areas (ICARDA) and ICRISAT and is hosted by ICRISAT.
