Dr Shivali Sharma
Theme Leader - Pre-breeding
Genetic Gains Program

Shivali Sharma is Theme Leader – Pre-breeding; and Senior Scientist – Genetic Resources at ICRISAT-Hyderabad.  She has a PhD in Plant Breeding from Himachal Pradesh Agriculture University, Palampur, India.

She is a recipient of ICRISAT’s Promising Young Scientist Award, Outstanding Scientific Article Award and Resources Mobilizer Award in recognition of her research achievements on the use of plant genetic resources for pre-breeding.

Sharma is developing pre-breeding populations by involving wild species and well-adapted varieties for the introgression of novel genes for crop improvement. The major focus of her research is on introgression of genes conferring resistance/tolerance for ascochyta blight, botrytis grey mold, dry root rot and pod borer in chickpea; phytophthora blight, pod borer, and salinity in pigeonpea; late leaf spot, stem rot and collar rot in groundnut; and terminal drought, flowering-stage heat and blast resistance in pearl millet. Her research also includes identification of marker-trait associations using AB-QTL and BC-NAM to accelerate introgression of QTLs/genes in elite cultivars.

She has published over 90 research papers, web articles, book chapters and conference papers.

Expertise in: Doubled-haploidy (DH) breeding, plant genetic resource management and utilization, wide hybridization, tissue culture, crop breeding
