ICRISAT Into the New Millennium

jpg Scientific Focus ICRISAT’s primary focus is on three key resources of the SAT:
  • Genetic Resources of the SAT: ICRISAT is concerned with the effective conservation, development and utilization of the full genetic resource endowment of the SAT. ICRISAT also helps when called upon in areas where its crops are important to developing countries lying outside the SAT.

  • Natural Resources of the SAT: ICRISAT, in partnership with relevant stakeholders, strives to identify ways in which SAT farmers and communities can protect the environment for sustainable development over the long term, while enhancing productivity. ICRISAT’s work covers all developing countries and regions of the SAT.

    Milestones: 1983

  • Hon Illa Maikassoua, Nigerien Minister for Higher Education and Research, lays the Foundation Stone of ISC, 16 Aug
  • HM Queen Elizabeth II of United Kingdom, and HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, visit ICRISAT Center, 19 Nov
  • Socioeconomic Resources of the SAT: ICRISAT’s mission is centered on the welfare of the most vulnerable people of the SAT (who constitute the bulk of those living in this agro-ecosystem) -- and recognizes that the solution to SAT problems can only come through their efforts, building upon their precious store of traditional knowledge.
