ICRISAT Into the New Millennium

jpg Genetic Resources Strategy Thus, ICRISAT is strengthening its leading role in collecting, conserving, and characterizing crop germplasm resources of the SAT. When resources permit it will explore a similar role in microbial germplasm resources.
ICRISAT is adopting a new paradigm in strategic germplasm research -- that is, it will use all necessary disciplines and "new science" to exploit, more systematically and fully, the genetic endowment in its genebank.

Molecular work will feature strong partnerships with advanced research institutions, and the transfer of these new tools to SAT NARS. These efforts will create intermediate genetic products, and provide them to developing-country networks and other partnership initiatives worldwide. For the first time in its history, ICRISAT's genetic improvement effort is being organized according to major topical thrusts, rather than crop mandates. The objective of this change is to create more flexibility to address the Institute’s Mission.

jpg The major thrusts are:
  • Conserve biodiversity of important SAT food crops for the long-term benefit of humanity
  • Adapt and apply "New Science" methods to SAT crop improvement
  • Investigate the biology and improvement of disease and pest resistance, stress tolerance, and quality
  • Promote partnerships to share breeding materials in farmer-ready forms

    Milestones: 1987-88

  • MOU with Nepal, Nigeria, and Sri Lanka
  • Establishment of Legumes On-farm Testing and Nursery Unit (LEGOFTEN)
  • Establishment of Cooperative Cereals Research Network (CCRN)
  • Operations in Burkina Faso terminated
  • MOU with Peoples’ Republic of China
