ICRISAT in West and Central Africa
As early as 1975, a Regional cooperative program for West Africa was launched, and
work started in Upper Volta (now Burkina Faso). A year later the ICRISAT West Africa Sorghum
and Pearl Millet Improvement Project began, based at Dakar, Senegal.

In 1981, ICRISAT signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Government of Niger for
the establishment of a major new research facility at Sadore, near Niamey. Research began the
same season, although construction continued for another 3 years.

The West and Central African Sorghum Research Network was established in 1986, and the
President of Niger, Hon. Seyni Kountché visited us the same year. A research complex
for sorghum improvement in West Africa was established in Samanko, Mali in 1989. The other
major West and Central African research network, the Millet Network, began in 1990.
