ICRISAT Into the New Millennium

ICRISAT in Southern and Eastern Africa |
In 1981/82, following
recommendations made by the SADC (Southern African Development Community) Heads of State,
ICRISAT was asked to lead two regional programs in southern Africa. The SADC/ICRISAT
Groundnut Project, based at Lilongwe, Malawi, was established in 1982; and the Sorghum and
Millet Improvement Program (SMIP), headquartered in Matopos, Zimbabwe, two years later. |
|
| Soon after, ICRISAT was invited by the Organization for
African Unity to work on sorghum and millets under the Semi-Arid Food Grains Research and
Development (SAFGRAD) program based in Kenya. |
|
The Eastern Africa Regional Cereals and
Legumes Network was established at the Kiboko Research Station in Kenya in 1990. The
following year, a Vertisol watersheds collaborative project began with International
Livestock Centre for Africa (ILCA; later ILRI), and Institute of Agricultural Research in
Ethiopia. |
