ICRISAT Into the New Millennium

jpg ICRISAT in Southern and Eastern Africa In 1981/82, following recommendations made by the SADC (Southern African Development Community) Heads of State, ICRISAT was asked to lead two regional programs in southern Africa. The SADC/ICRISAT Groundnut Project, based at Lilongwe, Malawi, was established in 1982; and the Sorghum and Millet Improvement Program (SMIP), headquartered in Matopos, Zimbabwe, two years later. jpg

Soon after, ICRISAT was invited by the Organization for African Unity to work on sorghum and millets under the Semi-Arid Food Grains Research and Development (SAFGRAD) program based in Kenya.

jpg The Eastern Africa Regional Cereals and Legumes Network was established at the Kiboko Research Station in Kenya in 1990.
