ICRISAT Into the New Millennium

Research Agenda

ICRISAT uses a three-pronged approach to helping the people of SAT make better use of their resources:
  • Research on understanding the potential of SAT resources;
  • Research to generate and assess knowledge and technology that promotes better use of SAT resources, in a way which is balanced between commodity and ecoregional approaches; and
  • Sharing of assessed technologies with partners, including studies on technology adoption.

jpg New Scientific Directions

To provide the needed scientific focus to realize its vision, ICRISAT will capitalize on rapid advances being made in three areas of science:

  • Genetics: Increased emphasis on the new tools of molecular genetics will enable ICRISAT to understand better (and faster) the full potential of SAT’s genetic resource endowment, preserve the genetic heritage, and develop new materials.

    Milestones: 1982

  • ICRISAT celebrates 10th anniversary!
  • Release of four sorghum varieties (People’s Republic of China), hybrid Hageen Durra 1 (Sudan); and pearl millet WC-C75 (India)
  • SADC/ICRISAT Groundnut Project starts, Lilongwe, Malawi
  • Establishment of Comisión Latinoamericano de Investigadores en Sorgo (CLAIS)
  • Ecology and informatics: ICRISAT will make full use of GIS, genetic, agroecological, and bioinformatic technologies for characterizing and modeling natural resource systems, and for targeting and sharing of information and materials.
  • People-centered science: ICRISAT will utilize to the fullest extent people-centered research approaches to understand the dynamics of households and communities and to design technologies through participatory approaches.
