ICRISAT-NGO collaboration boosted the morale of the
groundnut farmers of Amravati and its neighboring districts in Maharashtra, India. A
holistic approach using high-yielding varieties with an improved package of cultivation
practices has bolstered the efforts of farmers in achieving higher productivity.
"I couldn't believe it myself, 5« tons of dried
groundnut pods from a hectare in about 130 days! Never had I imagined this big a yield
from groundnut. A high-yielding groundnut variety with an improved package of practices
developed by ICRISAT has made it possible," said Mr Shashimohan Neelkanth Rao
Deshmukh of Talwel in Amravati District, Maharashtra, India. His face lit up with joy as
he recounted how he reaped a bountiful groundnut harvest last season.
An enterprising farmer, Mr Deshmukh is an active member of the National Academy of
Agricultural Development and Entrepreneurship and Marketing (NAADEM), a non-governmental
organization (NGO) which guides farmers in production, marketing, and export. He has
actively participated in the academy's many training and orientation programs.
