ABI-ICRISAT selected for National Entrepreneurship Award 2019 (Ecosystems Builder category) by Government of India

Description: The Agri-Business Incubator (ABI) of ICRISAT won the National Entrepreneurship Award 2019 (Ecosystems Builder category) for its contributions towards entrepreneurship promotion in India. The award is given annually by the Government of India’s Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) to honor entrepreneurs and entrepreneurship development organizations in the country. Dr Kiran Sharma (Head) and Jonathan Philroy (Manager) from ABI-ICRISAT received the award from Dr Mahendra Nath Pandey, Minister of State for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship.

Doreen Margaret Mashler Award for Dr Pooran Gaur

Description: Dr Pooran Gaur, Research Program Director – Asia, has been awarded ICRISAT’s highest scientific award – The Doreen Margaret Mashler Award for 2018. The Institute’s Governing Board awarded Dr Gaur for his decades-long contribution to chickpea improvement, outstanding scientific achievements and leadership.

ICRISAT’s Young Scientist award for 2018: Prakash Gangashetty

Description: Dr Prakash Gangashetty, Lead Scientist, Pearl Millet Breeding, Western and Central Africa, was announced as the recipient of ICRISAT’s Young Scientist award for 2018. The award recognizes his efforts to improve pearl millet breeding in West and Central Africa (WCA).

Dr Rajeev Varshney receives the coveted GD Birla Award for Scientific Research

Description: The KK Birla Foundation honored Dr Rajeev K. Varshney, Research Program Director – Genetic gains, with the 28th GD Birla Award for Scientific Research for the year 2018. The award was in recognition of Dr Varshney’s high caliber scientific research and pioneering contributions in integrating advanced discoveries in genomics with crop improvement in developing countries. This coveted award in the scientific community is given to eminent Indian scientists below the age of 50.

First Lady of Niger becomes Smart Food Ambassador

Award given for taking the ‘waste’ out of wastewater in India’s villages for agriculture

Description: Earlier a menace, swamps in Mentapally are now water sources for agriculture. The turnaround in the south Indian village comes on the heels of a three-year-old wetland construction which treats over 6.5 million liters of wastewater a year. This has been recognized through Dr Aviraj Datta, ICRISAT scientist, receiving the ‘Impactful CSR Leader’ award at the Corporate Social Responsibility Summit & Awards 2019 held recently in Bengaluru.

CSR leadership award to Dr Aviraj Datta

Description: ICRISAT Development Center’s Dr Aviraj Datta, Scientist – Wastewater Management, received the ‘Impactful CSR Leader’ award at the Corporate Social Responsibility Summit & Awards 2019 held recently in Bengaluru. Dr Datta was recognized for his work in the Decentralized Wastewater Treatment plant in Mentapally, Telangana. The plant treats wastewater from 125 households for use in agriculture. It was set up in 2016 through a CSR initiative of REC Limited, a Government of India enterprise.

AZRAI Honorary Fellowship award to Dr Rajeev Varshney

Description: For his immense contribution to the improvement of dryland crops of developing countries through pioneering contribution in the application of genomics and molecular breeding, Dr Rajeev Varshney, Research program Director, Genetic Gains, ICRISAT, was awarded Honorary Fellowship by the Arid Zone Research Association of India at Jodhpur on 11 February at the “13th International Conference on Development of Drylands”.

AARES Distinguished Fellow award to Dr Wendy Umberger

Description: Dr Wendy Umberger, member ICRISAT Governing Board, received the Australasian Agricultural & Resource Economics Society (AARES) Distinguished Fellow award. This award recognizes members who, throughout their career, have made distinguished contributions to the advancement of agricultural and resource economics through research, teaching, extension, administration, business, or public service.

Making waves: Ten Indians among global top 4000 scientists

Description: Ten Indian scientists have made it to the list of the world’s top 4000 scientists. This list was released in November 2018 by Clarivate Analytics, a global organization providing analytics to aid research and innovation. ICRISAT’s Dr Rajeev K Varshney, Research Program Director – Genetic Gains, is one of the ten Indian scientists. This news has made waves in the media and was featured in several publications recently.

Prof PV Sukhatme Gold Medal for Dr Abhishek Rathore

Description: Dr Abhishek Rathore, Theme Leader, Statistics, Bioinformatics & Data Management, ICRISAT, was awarded the Prof PV Sukhatme Gold Medal during the 72nd Annual Conference of Indian Society of Agricultural Statistics (ISAS).

Description: Dr Rajeev K Varshney, Research Program Director, Genetic Gains, ICRISAT; and Dr Hari D Upadhyaya, former Head, Genebank, ICRISAT, have been named by Clarivate Analytics as two of the Highly Cited Researchers worldwide for 2018.

Description: Receives American Society of Agronomy fellowship for contributions to Genomics & Molecular breeding The American Society of Agronomy (ASA) conferred its prestigious 2018 fellowship on Dr Rajeev K Varshney, Research Program Director, Genetic Gains, ICRISAT, in Baltimore, USA. The fellowship is the highest recognition bestowed by the ASA for Dr Varshney’s meritorious contributions to genomics and molecular breeding for crop improvement. He is the only Indian scientist and one of three non-US scientists to have received the fellowship this year. Only up to 0.3% of the society’s active and emeritus members receive this honor each year.

Global endorsement of CGIAR work: IITA wins first Africa Food Prize

Description: The first Africa Food Prize has been awarded to the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), a member of the CGIAR System Organization. The institute received the distinguished prize in Kigali, Rwanda, last week for ‘Leadership and Innovation in Finding Solutions to the Continent’s Most Pressing Challenges’. IITA, based in Ibadan, Nigeria, was recognized for generating solutions on and off the farm that have improved the lives of millions in the face of climate change, a surge of crop pests and disease, and an urgent need for youth employment. This recognition reiterates CGIAR research endeavors to create a better future for the world’s poor.

ICRISAT awarded Microsoft’s AI for Earth grant to promote environmental sustainability

Description: As part of its worldwide AI for Earth program, Microsoft has recently announced grants to provide artificial intelligence (AI) technology to organizations engaged in solving environmental challenges. ICRISAT is one of the grantees and will now be able to use Microsoft Azure resources for weather predictions and pest migration information.

Description: Professor John DH (Dyno) Keatinge MBE, former Deputy Director General-Research (DDG-R), ICRISAT, was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Science (DSc) on 4 July
2018 by the University of Reading, UK

ICRISAT declared as Centre of Excellence for tribal development

Description: The Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Government of India, declared ICRISAT as a Centre of Excellence to support and strengthen active research in the field of tribal development. Dr Peter Carberry, Director General (Acting), ICRISAT and Dr Arvind Padhee, Director, Country Relations and Business Affairs, ICRISAT, formally received the certificate from the Union Minister of Tribal Affairs, Mr Jual Oram, in New Delhi in June. ICRISAT has been working for the development of tribals in Telangana in partnership with stakeholders. With improved livelihood, employment opportunities and decreased dependence on middle-men, tribal farmers in Adilabad district moved from subsistence to commercial operations.

Dr Manish K Pandey awarded TAS Fellowship

Description: Dr Manish K Pandey, Senior Scientist-Groundnut Genomics, accepting Associate Fellowship of Telangana Academy of Sciences (TAS) from Prof K Narasimha Reddy, President, TAS on 28 April 2018 in Hyderabad. Dr Pandey was recognized for his outstanding achievements in crop genomics and molecular breeding.

Doreen Margaret Mashler Award for Dr. Mamta Sharma and Dr. Pooja Bhatnagar-Mathur

Description: ICRISAT’s highest award for research, was announced by its Governing Board today. Dr Mamta Sharma and Dr Pooja Bhatnagar-Mathur are joint recipients of the Doreen Margaret Mashler Award for 2018, for significant work in their respective research fields of plant pathology and biotechnology at the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT).

Description: Dr Peter Carberry, ICRISAT, DDG, was conferred Honorary Fellowship by the Indian Society of Pulses Research & Development (ISPRD) and felicitated by Indian Institute of Pulses Research (IIPR), Kanpur.

Dr Rajeev Varshney awarded Faculty Research Award 2018

Description: Hon’ble Shri Prakash Javadekar, Union Minister of Human Resource Development, Government of India, felicitating Dr. Rajeev Varshney, Research Program Director, Genetic Gains, ICRISAT, with Faculty Research Awards 2018 as a ‘top researcher’ under the Agricultural and Biological Sciences category, at New Delhi on 20 March 2018. The award is presented to academic researchers in India across 24 disciplines and carries a cash prize of Rs. 50,000 and a citation.

ICRISAT scientist receives global Legacy Award for contribution towards protection of crop diversity

Description: Dr Hari D Upadhyaya from ICRISAT, India, has received the global Legacy Award, along with six other scientists, for exceptional contribution through his life’s work on the preservation of crop diversity.

Smart Food selected as a global LAUNCH Food innovation

Description:Smart Food, an initiative which will initially focus on popularizing millets and sorghum, has been selected by LAUNCH Food as one of the winning innovations for 2017. The global recognition and mentorship support of LAUNCH Food will help Smart Food to achieve major impacts globally by promoting the demand for millets and strengthen the value chains while ensuring that smallholder farmers benefit.

Young Scientist Award for Rachit K Saxena

Description:Dr Rachit K Saxena, Senior Scientist, Genomics and Trait Discovery, Research Program Genetic Gains, ICRISAT, was awarded the Young Scientist Award for his contributions in decoding pigeonpea and chickpea genomes and understanding the genetics behind genomic controls of economically important traits.

Award of recognition for leadership and contributions to peanut research to RK Varshney

Description: Dr Rajeev K Varshney, Research Program Director, Genetic Gains, ICRISAT, was recognized and felicitated for his leadership in the development and application of genomic tools and pipelines that facilitate sequence-based breeding methods for improvement of Arachis cultivars. The award was presented by The Peanut Genome Consortium and the International Peanut Genome Initiative (IPGI) during the 9th Advances in Arachis through Genomics & Biotechnology (AAGB) meeting held in Cordoba, Argentina, during 14-17 March.

Dr Varshney elected member of Leopoldina

Description:Dr Rajeev Varshney, Research Program Director – Genetic Gains, was elected member of Leopoldina, German National Academy of Sciences. The academy elected Dr Varshney as its member in 2016 in recognition of his outstanding scientific achievements.

Associateship of National Academy of Agricultural Sciences (NAAS) to Abhishek Rathore

Description:Dr Manish K Pandey, Scientist, Groundnut Genomics, Genetic Gains Program, ICRISAT, was awarded Associateship of the National Academy of Agricultural Sciences (NAAS), India, on 5 June in New Delhi. The award recognizes serving young scientists below 40 years of age, working in agriculture-related disciplines in Research/ Academic Systems in India.

Description:Telangana Academy of Sciences has honored Dr Mahendar Thudi, Senior Scientist-Chickpea Genomics, ICRISAT with a Fellowship. On an annual basis, the Academy honors scientists in recognition of their contributions to scientific excellence.

Jawaharlal Nehru Award for P.G. Outstanding Doctoral Thesis to Dr Bhogireddy Sailaja

Description:Dr Bhogireddy Sailaja, DBT-Research Associate, Genetic Gains Program, ICRISAT, has been awarded the ‘Jawaharlal Nehru Award for P.G. Outstanding Doctoral Thesis Research in Agricultural and Allied Sciences 2016’ in the Biotechnology category.

Jaba Jagdish awarded Special Mention Certificate

Description:Dr Jagdish Jaba, Scientist-Entymology, ICRISAT, was awarded a Special Mention Certificate in the Young Scientist category at the EET CRS 5th Academic Achievements Awards (2017). The award ceremony was organized by Education Expo TV on 10 September 2017 in Mumbai.

Description:Dr Anthony Whitbread, Research Program Director – Innovation Systems for the Drylands, has been selected as a member of the new Executive Committee of the Agricultural Model Intercomparison and Improvement Program (AgMIP).

Abhishek honoured as Fellow of the Indian Society of Agricultural Statistics

Description:Dr Abhishek Rathore, Theme Leader – Statistics, Bio-Informatics & Data Management, ICRISAT, was honored as a Fellow of the Indian Society of Agricultural Statistics (ISAS),  during its 71st Annual Conference on Statistics and Informatics for Farmers Welfare. Fellows are chosen based on their contribution to agricultural statistics.

 Dr Rajeev K Varshney among World’s Most Influential Scientific Minds and Highly cited researchers 4th time in a row According to the latest Clarivate Analytics’ edition of the Highly Cited Researchers List,  Dr. Varshney is among 2017’s Highly Cited Researchers worldwide. More than 3,000 researchers from 21 fields who have produced a notable number of highly cited papers in Clarivate’s Web of Science database over the period 2005-2015 are featured in this list. Selection of authors is based on publication of highly cited (those that rank in the top 1 % by citations) papers. Such consistent production of highly cited reports indicates that the work of these researchers has been repeatedly judged by their peers to be of notable significance and utility.

Description:Dr Vincent Vadez awarded for new climate change initiative by French President Macron just before the French Climate Summit in Paris. The GxExMxS work recognised to tackle drought and other future climate risks.

ABP News – CSR Leadership Award for the Best Community Development Project

Description:ICRISAT was presented the ABP News – CSR Leadership Award for the Best Community Development Project, during the World CSR Congress, held at Taj Lands End, Mumbai on 17 February, 2016. The award was conferred on the “Parasai-Sindh Watershed Project,” implemented with the support of Coca-Cola India Foundation, India. The Coca-Cola India Foundation for Rural Water Infrastructure and the ICRISAT-led consortium, which had participants from the National Research Centre for Agro-forestry (NRCAF), farmers and the Government of Uttar Pradesh, identified the micro-watershed, Parasai-Sindh in Babina block of Jhansi district, as a pilot site for improving water use efficiency, groundwater recharge and strengthening ecosystem services through the community watershed management program.

ABP News-CSR leadership award – under the category Accounting for climate change

Description:ICRISAT was presented the ABP News – CSR Leadership Award under the category  Accounting for Climate Change during the World CSR Congress, held at Taj Lands End, Mumbai on 17 February 2016. The award recognized ICRISAT’s efforts to promote climate-smart agricultural practices, and the development of a pool of climate-smart agricultural practices shared with the agricultural community through participatory and partnership research approaches. The integrated watershed management model adopted by ICRISAT is a holistic approach for improving resource use efficiency and enhancing livelihoods through proper land and water management, integrated nutrient management, adoption of improved cultivars, rainwater harvesting, integrated pest and disease management, and capacity development of stakeholders within the community. ICRISAT develops solutions to help communities cope with dryland stresses and adapt to climate change by understanding the impact of dryland stresses on smallholder agriculture; undertaking crop simulation models; helping develop value chains for crops that are better adapted to the harsh and variable climate of the drylands; better farm management (e.g., soil revitalization, water conservation, and crop and livestock diversity); and providing climate modeling and decision-making tools.
