Course description
The new breeding technique (NBT), gene editing, which enables very rapid and precise trait production and selection without having any negative effects on the native phenotypes, lies at the heart of the newage agricultural breakthroughs currently available to breeders. These techniques will also speed up genetic advancements and product delivery, enabling “disruptive reductions” in the input costs for farmers and “exponential improvements” in nutrition and production.
Gene editing technologies have revolutionized the ability to alter DNA at the molecular level, and this technology has implications that go well beyond those of conventional molecular biology. A hands-on training program on “Gene Editing in plants using CRISPR/Cas9 system” is a comprehensive training program ideal for researchers who are looking for a balanced theoretical and hands-on introduction to gene editing. The training program includes both theory and hands on practical for better understanding the various components and stages of gene editing.
The training will help to learn the basic gene editing workflows, from design and synthesis of target-specific guide RNAs (gRNAs), delivery of gRNAs in plant cells, detection, and analysis of gene editing efficiencies. This is a great opportunity to interact and benefit from the expertise of our scientists and collaborators, as they help you design your first gene editing experiment. We are confident that by the end of the workshop, participants will be able to develop their experimental workflows.
Objective
- Cover the basic concept of gene editing technology
- Bioinformatic tools for design guide-RNA and CRISPR/Cas9 construct
- Train participants in high-throughput techniques for gene editing application
- Introduction to functional validation of edited lines
- Understand the ethics and biosafety of gene editing technologies
BioNcube is a BIRAC-Bio incubator supporting Ag-biotech innovation, development, and applications of broad range of biotechnological solutions spreading across various domains from basic research to product translation. Agribiotech start-ups incubated in BioNcube, have access to the scientific knowledge of ICRISAT, biotechnology laboratories with state-of- the-art equipments and infrastructure such as plant genotyping, phenotyping and transgenic facilities, greenhouses, plug-and- play modular labs, molecular biology lab, analytical lab, transformation facility, contained fields etc.
The value proposition of the BIRAC- Bio incubator is to link business incubation to translation and support ag-biotech start-ups from proof-of- concept stage through to technology translation and commercialization that will further benefit farming communities.
