From degraded land to productive farms

Women farmers in eastern Niger reclaim degraded land to grow crops and ensure nutrition to the family.

Interventions

  • Bio-reclamation of Degraded Lands (BDL) system converts 241 hectares of degraded land to farmland in 172 villages
  • Over 10,000 women farmers involved; 0.02 ha of land to each woman farmer
  • Water harvesting techniques (zai holes, demi lunes) taught
  • Hardy high-value trees/crops planted.

Impacts

  • Women empowered through acquisition of land
  • Improved soil fertility through organic manure addition, reduction in soil erosion
  • Mitigation of climate change through carbon sequestration
  • Average increase in income – US$ 26; 50% increase over pre-BDL income
  • Household nutrition enhanced with diverse trees/crops, eg moringa, okra, etc.
