Intercrop innovations in Kenya

ICRISAT has been promoting the sorghum-legume (pigeonpea/cowpea/green grams) intercrop system as a ‘climate smart’ alternative technology. This has involved conducting farmer and end user participatory evaluation of new, available and released sorghum and legume varieties to identify best bets for further dissemination and adoption.

Interventions

  • The Mother and baby trial approach was used in the selected villages. In each village, three mother trial fields were planted with sorghum and legume intercrops. Each mother trial had a minimum of fourteen baby trials.
  • Improved and released varieties of cowpeas, green gram and sorghum varieties from ICRISAT and KALRO were used for demonstration of integrated varieties and fertilizer use.

    • Use of sorghum and legume residues to prepare livestock feed
    • Use of sorghum and legume residues as mulch and compost for soil fertility improvement
    • Use of improved agronomic practices
    • Improve post-harvest processing and storage practices to reduce losses and maintain high quality.
