16) ICRISAT DG is Future Harvest Foundation Chairman (4th June 2003)

Dr William D Dar, Director General of the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), has been elected the Chairman of the Governing Board of the Future Harvest Foundation (FHF).

Dr Dar was elected to this position at the Governing Board meeting of the Future Harvest Foundation, held on 15 May at The Hague, the Netherlands. The Future Harvest Board has representation from the Directors General of the institutes under the umbrella of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). ICRISAT is one of the CGIAR institutes.

Dar succeeds Dr Hubert Zandstra, Director General of the International Potato Center (located at Lima, Peru) as the Chairman of Future Harvest. The appointment is for two years.

The 16 CGIAR international agricultural research institutes created the Future Harvest Foundation in 1998 to catalyse action for a world with less poverty, better environment and food security. It is located at Washington, USA.

Future Harvest commissions scientific studies on agriculture, the environment and economic growth. It enlists high-profile public figures as advocates and educates the public about the importance of agricultural research in meeting human and environmental challenges.

At The Hague meeting the FHF Governing Board recommended that the Foundation expand its mandate and become a unit of the CGIAR system. At present it is a unit of the Center Directors Committee, representing the chiefs of the 16 international agricultural research institutes under CGIAR. The Board recommended the inclusion of a broader spectrum of stakeholders at the policy level to revitalise the Foundation.

Dr Dar is also the Chairman of the Public Awareness and Resource Mobilization Committee of the CGIAR system.
