Our approach

Our approach is through partnerships and with an Inclusive Market Oriented Development.

Partnerships are critical as ICRISAT takes a catalyst role to help rural communities develop their own solutions and engage
the actors needed to bring the vision to reality.

Inclusive means we are inclusive of the farmers in developing solutions and inclusive of the all people especially women and youth.

Market Oriented Development means we focus our research and development efforts on making farming profitable,
helping move farmers from subsistence to commercial operators.

Mandate crops

Because we focus on the drylands, we have an extra specialization on crops that survive in these harsh climates.
Legumes:

Nutri-cereals

For these mandated crops, ICRISAT builds special expertise across the whole value chain – conserving, analyzing, breeding, understanding on- farm management practices, processing and agribusiness opportunities.
We call these Smart Food because they are:
–Good for you – highly nutritious
Good for the planet – low water footprint, lowers the carbon footprint, good for the soils, use fewer chemicals, etc.
Good for the small holder farmer – survive in the harshest climates, multiple uses, potential to significantly increase yield, untapped demand etc.-
