Scientist – Agrobiodiveristy and Ecosystem Services

ICRISAT seeks applications from Indian Nationals for the position of Scientist – Agrobiodiversity and Ecosystem Services. The position reports to Senior Scientist and Country Representative, Bioversity International and will based at Bioversity International Office in Bangalore, India.

  • Conduct and coordinate participatory and formal research on the use and conservation of agricultural biodiversity and evaluate ecosystem services in different agroecosystems of the region
  • Organize, supervise, and participate in the implementation of field activities related to ecosystem services contributing to sustainable agrobiodiversity management in agricultural and related landscapes
  • Develop farmers’ experimental and innovation networks across relevant project sites and coordinate related logistical support activities
  • Plan and carry out research to identify and test interventions to enhance the contribution of agricultural biodiversity to agricultural systems and farmer livelihoods through risk management and improved resource use
  • Oversee and monitor data gathering and data entry into databases and carry out
  • Conduct  statistical analysis such as ANOVA, Correlation and regression (both linear and non-linear), and application of ecological models
  • Develop and manage budgets for to support timely completion of research tasks
  • Develop and maintain effective relations with national partners, including from research institutes, NGOs, local institutions, communities, and farmers to implement project activities in a proactive way
  • Prepare technical reports and coordinate the compilation of financial reports and ensure their timely submission
  • Develop and implement capacity building initiatives for national partners including building and strengthening capacities in research methodologies and protocols towards the implementation of project activities
  • Author/co-author and publish articles in peer-reviewed international and regional technical journals related to research results
  • Contribute to other tasks as required and assigned 


  • Ph.D. in biological, environmental or agricultural sciences with specialization in pollination ecology and climate change
  • At least 5 years relevant experience, including experience in field work, with strong farmer interactions, particularly in implementing surveys and interacting with households and other actors at the community level
  • Experience in participatory research methods
  • Experience in design and pre-test of field tools for both quantitative and qualitative assessment.
  • Knowledge of basic statistical methods and tools
  • Experience curating and managing large and complex databases
  • Publication record in peer-reviewed international journals


  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and team work skills including the ability to effectively interact with people at all levels
  • Experience working in a multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary environment
  • Fluency in English and local language to interact with farmers and communities across project sites
  • Knowledge of additional local languages will be highly desirable.
  • Strong analytical and synthesizing skills including the ability to write clear and concise scientific documents and research proposals


This is a Scientific and Managerial Group (SMG) position for two years, renewable based on the performance of the incumbent and the institute’s continuing need for the position.
